Hosted by Tishman Speyer, and supported by the Embassy of Mexico and its Consulate General in New York, Revealing Mexico Week will give the people of New York City the opportunity to participate first-hand in the special celebration from October 25th through October 31st in Rockefeller Center.
Revealing Mexico Week will honor the traditions and people of Mexico, while also spotlighting the country’s unique contemporary culture through a weeklong series of events, including: a gala kick-off reception, a special photography installation and artist book signing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store, a highly anticipated culinary tasting with one of Mexico’s top chefs, and free concert performances ranging from classical to the cutting edge of modern Mexican music.
REVEALING MEXICO WEEK - Opening Night Gala: The VIP cocktail reception at Top of The Rock on the evening of October 25th will bring together many of New York and Mexico's leading celebrity, cultural, financial and political figures.
The Revealing Mexico Photography Exhibit will display twenty-four striking black & white images from photographer John Mack's and writer Susanne Steines' newly released book Revealing Mexico from which the concept of the Rockefeller Center event was founded. The photographs will be on display from October 25 through October 31 in the world-renowned Channel Gardens. John Mack and Susanne Steines will also take part in a book signing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store at Rockefeller Center on October 27th from 5-7pm. A taste of modern Mexican cuisine will take place at the Rock Center Café at 4pm on October 26th, as the country's top-rated chef Martha Ortiz (owner of Mexico City's hottest new restaurant, Dulce Patria) showcases her critically praised signature dishes. Revealing Mexico Book Release
September, 2010
In 2010, Mexico observes two important anniversaries: the bicentennial of its independence from Spain and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. These two milestones offer the country's 111 million citizens and 30 million Mexican Americans an unprecedented opportunity to rediscover and celebrate their shared heritage. Revealing Mexico by John Mack and Susanne Steines is an astonishing new photographic portrait and literary testimony of the country.
For a period of ten years, up-and-coming American photographer Mack and writer Steines crisscrossed Mexico, photographing its vibrant city and rural life, its stunning architecture, striking landscapes, and captivating people. With roughly 175 images representing all 31 states, from the canyons of Chihuahua to the Mayan ruins of Chiapas, from the indigenous communities of Oaxaca to the bustling port towns of the Yucatán, as well as the skyscrapers and thoroughfares of Mexico City, Revealing Mexico offers a poetic vista of Mexico's landscape today. What's more, the book also includes portraits of individuals from all walks of Mexican life, such as the writers Carlos Fuentes and Jorge Volpi; business icons such as Carlos Slim; the artists Leonora Carrington, Gustavo Pérez, and Betsabée Romero; academics Enrique Krauze, Denise Dresser, and Carlos Monsiváis; the actors Ignacio López Tarso and Edith González, as well as a fisherman, a cliff diver, a taco seller, a wrestler, and a mariachi—plus many others. Each portrait is accompanied by an interview in which the subject speaks about what it means to be Mexican.
Revealing Mexico is the book of the Mexican bicentennial. On a national level, it offers a new way for Mexicans to see their country. On an international level, it aims to reaffirm cultural relationships across borders, one people to another. It presents an honest window into the country's everyday life, offering a chance to set aside cultural stereotypes and say, once and for all, "This is the real Mexico."
